Amateur Radio Operators, your skills and equipment would be appreciated to help us provide communications services to the event organizers and sponsors, the Canadian Hostelling Association.  This relay (foot) race takes places in scenic southwest Alberta.  The 100 mile, all paved, linear relay race begins early on a Saturday morning in the prairie cowboy village of Longview, south of Calgary, and proceeds west into the majestic Rocky Mountains.  The route swings north over Canada's highest paved mountain pass, and culminates early evening at the Nakiska ski resort, mountain venue of many of the 1988 winter Olympics.

We have need this year for more radio operators than we've used in the past.  This will be a great opportunity for not only experienced HAMS to continue their long tradition of contributing to the success of this premier Calgary activity, but also for new HAM radio operators, with equipment, to take an active role participating in one of CARA's many public service activities.

The different positions require different types of HAM radio equipment.

- all positions require a vehicle

- spotter positions, at minimum, require a handheld radio, VHF or UHF, with extra batteries or 12VDC power cord

- station positions require, at minimum, a dual band mobile radio, handheld radio, and a loudspeaker for the mobile radio

- roamer position requires, at minimum, a VHF mobile radio.

- if in the ambulance, you will need to be able to install your mobile radio in the ambulance (power supply and antenna). You also need a handheld and you need cross band capability between your handheld and mobile.

Coordinator for amateur radio operators is VA6RPL, Peter LaGrandeur: VA6RPL@techworld.ca; (403) 969-7411.

There will be a K-100 volunteer orientation evening, on June 11, Thursday evening, at 6 PM with free pizza, soft drinks, and t-shirts given out.  Venue is the Marlborough Park Community Centre, 6021 Madigan Drive NE, Calgary.

Besides the satisfaction of contributing to the success of a community charitable cause, there is included a roast beef dinner the evening before, breakfast the day of, lunch bag, and a BBQ at end of the day, all free to volunteers.

Returning radio volunteers, I will start by putting everyone into the same positions they had last year.  Let me know if you would like to try a different spot this year.  Each station position will now have two radio people.
