I just got my license and I am looking at what kinds of radios to start with. I am mostly interested in mobile and em com stuff at this point. I am looking at to mobile radios for the car. I am just wondering if anyone has experience with the radios and can tell me why one over the other. One is the TYT TH 9800 Quad band (10, 6, 2m,70cm) the other is the Yaesu 8900R, Quad band. They seem to have similar features. Advice or comments from those with experience with these products would be welcomed.
I can't comment on either the TYT or the Yeasu models you are looking at - haven't used either of them.
Depending on your desired use case - crossband repeating can be a very useful feature to have in a mobile radio. Crossbanding allows you to situate the radio in a good spot and have good local mobility instead of needing to stay in your car or to install a loudspeaker. Generally you would use a mobile crossband radio in conjunction with a handheld radio.
You may want to learn about APRS, and decide if this is something that fits for you.
Whatever you do end up going with - come try it out at a Rally or other event!
Yes! Do consider trying out your equipment at the next Rally!
